No Harmony: Art Garfunkel Books Show in Minnesota Same Night as Paul Simon’s Career Finale Concert in Queens

Well, there’s nice thing and bad news. Art Garfunkel has booked a show in Minnesota on Saturday, September 22nd, within 24 hours Paul Simon plays his final concert, in Queens. There were hope that Simon & Garfunkel would reunite beneath the stars from the borough of their total youth for example last “Scarborough Fair.” It’s not going to happen.

But Garfunkel could still appear at one of the two preceding shows with Simon at Madison Square Garden. Since he’s not gonna sing on consecutive days, I’d bet around the first show, September 20th. This can be all speculation.

Back on December 13th, I did the interview with Art for the launch of his autobiography, “Precisely what is Just about Luminous.” During our lunch he earned a handful of veiled references to “something big that is definitely taking.” I never learned what that is, in case Simon announced his retirement tour I figured, thinking time for the lunch, that somehow these two old friends (for a second) had negotiated ways to have a very final performance that belongs to them. I sure hope that is the situation. I’ve got hardly any other inside information.

Garfunkel and that i were set to satisfy in a restaurant on Third Avenue and East 63rd St. that we imagine as Fiorello’s East, but hasn’t been so named around 2 decades. I do believe it’s called Tony DiNapoli’s. When i approached the restaurant by taxi, my phone rang. A really dear and old friend– someone I have been previously close to upwards of 40 years– called from London to know me her cancers of the breast had recurred understanding that she required new surgery after 11 a great deal of being cancer free. Talk about being startled. And unnerved. When Artie arrived I explained what had just happened anf the husband told her i would postpone our talk. Well, there we were there, and hungry, and we all persevered. Nonetheless never paid attention to the “tape” and didn’t publish an interview. It had been should the whole day was really a foggy dream.

This morning I watched Rita Braver’s excellent piece on Garfunkel on “CBS Sunday Morning.” I hope you watch it, too.?Follow on on that link. It covers everything we spoke of back on December 13th– how he lost and regained his voice, that he– unlike Simon– isn’t retiring but plowing ahead. That Garfunkel has always had an intellectual and cultural life separate from Simon, as well as difficulties of laboring beneath the shadow of the Simon & Garfunkel success for what has grown to be a lifetime. He’s a wise, funny guy who could sing in great amounts. We would have gotten that from my interview and we certainly get it from Rita’s.

“What on earth is Nearly Luminous” doesn’t turn up in paperback until next February. You can still order it from amazon as being a hardcover or on Kindle. I’d grab the hardcover. Artie designed it with assorted fonts. The style of it is actually cool, plus the content is sufficient to meet up with all our queries about Simon, about his personal life, about singing, reading, touring, and acting in movies like “Catch 22” and “Carnal Knowledge.” By the way, I went back and watched all of those films last summer– Garfunkel is excellent in each of those.

I have got a favorite Garfunkel album. It’s called “Breakaway” from 1975, produced by Richard Perry. It’s a masterpiece. Bigger all records. My favorite single was one called “Second Avenue.” It had become never when using album. Garfunkel doesn’t prefer it i really enjoy seeing, so he’s never included it with a collection. He doesn’t sing it now. It’s the one thing we disagree about. Go figure.

PS My good friend had her surgery, and she is thriving. A satisfied ending.
